Checklist Before Hiring A Contractor
Do your homework before you let just anyone, enter your home. Saving a few dollars now, may cost you more in the long run! Make sure your project is completed RIGHT the first time. Use this checklist to select a contractor you can trust, with your most valuable asset - your FAMILY first and your HOME!
(A) Is the contractor licensed to work in State of Georgia? O & S Installations, LLC provides you with a copy of our current license. LICENSING AND INSURANCE goes hand in hand - you CAN'T have INSURANCE without being licensed! So if your contractor is not LICENSED, there's a 100% chance that they DON'T HAVE INSURANCE!
(B) Does the contractor have proof of workers' compensation and general liability insurance? If not, you may be liable for any construction-related accident(s) on your premises. Ask for the Contractors insurance agent's name and number and call to get their "Certificate of Insurance" for these coverages. O & S Installations, LLC also provides this information HERE.
(C) Will the contractor provide you with names of their most recent customers? Ask if they have PHOTOS to go with the references. Call and ask if they would hire the same contractor again.
(D) Can you inspect the contractor's work "before, during and after" the project? Do they provide photos up front - or do say, "Photos upon request". If so, look for quality of workmanship, punctuality and materials provided.
(E) Will the contractor provide you with a complete and clearly written contract? A deposit is often required (for projects exceeding one day) , but DO NOT pay the entire amount up front. Always pay in increments - 1/3 before, 1/3 during and 1/3 upon completion of the project.
(F) Are you able to communicate easily with the contractor? Are you able to reach them throughout the day? Do they have more than a CELL PHONE number? Misunderstandings may cause problems. You will be in close contact with the contractor and may share your house with the crew until the project is completed.
(G) Be wary of contractors who go door-to-door offering discounts for finding other customers and watch out for those who offer to use materials left over from other jobs.
(H) Does the contractor have more than just a CELL PHONE number on their business card? Is there more than an
P. O. Box on there as well? Will you be able to find the contractor if a problem arises later?
(I) Do they provide a GUARANTEE of their workmanship?
(J) Have you checked with the local Better Business Bureau under the name of the owner and the company?
If you answered NO to any of these questions, you may want to pay a little more to get peace of mind.
